Conjunctivitis: More Than Just “Pink Eye”

Conjunctivitis, often referred to as "pink eye," is one of the most common conditions we treat in both kids and adults across our Sebring-area practice. It’s caused by inflammation of the conjunctiva — the clear tissue covering the white of your eye and inner eyelids — and it can be viral, bacterial, or allergic in origin.

Viral conjunctivitis is extremely contagious and often accompanies cold or flu symptoms. It typically starts with one eye and spreads to the other, with watery discharge, redness, and a gritty feeling. Bacterial conjunctivitis causes more significant discharge and may require antibiotic drops. Allergic conjunctivitis, on the other hand, is not contagious and often affects both eyes with itching and swelling.

We treat all three types differently, which is why it’s so important to get a proper diagnosis. In the office, we examine the eye under magnification and take a detailed history to determine the cause. This ensures we choose the right treatment and help prevent spreading, especially in schools and workplaces.

While most cases are mild, some forms of conjunctivitis can lead to complications if left untreated. That’s why we always recommend scheduling an appointment if you or your child is experiencing red, itchy, or goopy eyes.

We also educate families and patients on prevention — washing hands frequently, avoiding touching the eyes, not sharing towels or makeup, and disinfecting surfaces. These steps are especially important in households with children or in communal settings like daycares and schools.

If you're dealing with red, irritated eyes in the Sebring, Avon Park, or Lake Placid area, don’t assume it’s just pink eye — let us help you get to the root of the problem and feel better fast.
