Contact Lens Complications: What You Need to Know

Contact lenses offer amazing convenience and freedom for vision correction, but they aren’t without risk. In our Sebring-area practice, we often see patients who are surprised to learn that contact lenses can cause a range of eye problems — especially if they’re not used properly.

Some of the most common contact lens complications we treat include:

1. Dry Eye and Discomfort Contact lens wear can worsen or even cause dry eye symptoms, particularly in our Florida climate. Patients may experience burning, gritty sensations, or fluctuating vision. Daily disposable lenses, better lens materials, and tailored dry eye treatments can help relieve these issues.

2. Corneal Infections (Keratitis) This is one of the most serious complications. Sleeping in contacts, poor hygiene, or swimming with lenses can introduce bacteria, fungi, or even parasites into the eye. These infections can be painful and, in rare cases, cause permanent vision loss.

3. Corneal Ulcers A corneal ulcer is an open sore on the surface of the eye, often caused by infection. Symptoms include severe pain, redness, tearing, and sensitivity to light. Prompt treatment is essential to prevent scarring or permanent damage.

4. Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis (GPC) This allergic reaction can occur with extended contact lens wear. It causes itching, mucus discharge, and bumps on the inside of the eyelids. Often, switching to daily disposables or taking a break from lenses is needed to recover.

5. Improper Fit or Prescription Not all contact lenses are created equal — and not all eyes are the same. Poorly fitting lenses can lead to discomfort, blurry vision, or damage to the eye’s surface. That’s why a professional fitting is so important.

To reduce the risk of these complications, we emphasize these key habits:

  • Never sleep in your contact lenses

  • Wash and dry your hands before handling lenses

  • Replace your lenses and solution as directed

  • Avoid tap water and swimming with lenses

  • Schedule yearly contact lens exams — even if you feel fine

In our office, we specialize in custom contact lens fittings, including lenses for astigmatism, multifocal needs, and dry eye sufferers. We also offer specialty lenses like scleral lenses for those with corneal conditions or high prescriptions.

If you’re experiencing discomfort, red eyes, or changes in your vision while wearing contact lenses, don’t wait — schedule an appointment. Many complications can be reversed with early treatment, but delaying care can lead to long-term damage.

If you’re in Sebring, Wauchula, Avon Park, or Lake Placid and need a contact lens expert, we’re here to help protect your eyes and make sure your vision stays clear and comfortable.
