Macular degeneration is one of the leading causes of vision loss in older adults, and we talk to patients about it regularly in our Sebring and Lake Placid practice. It affects the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision — the kind we use for reading, driving, and recognizing faces.

There are two types of age-related macular degeneration (AMD): dry and wet. Dry AMD is more common and progresses slowly, while wet AMD is less common but more severe and can lead to rapid vision loss. Early signs include blurry central vision, difficulty reading fine print, or straight lines appearing wavy.

In our office, we screen all patients over 50 for early signs of macular degeneration. If we detect any changes, we can begin a proactive treatment plan tailored to your needs.

We carry supplements to keep the macula healthy in our office.  They contain all three critical macular pigments: lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin, which are clinically proven to support macular pigment density and may help protect against the progression of macular degeneration. We recommend MacuHealth and Visual Elements to patients who want to be proactive in preserving their central vision and supporting overall retinal health.

We also offer in-home monitoring technology known as the  Foresee Home monitoring device, a user-friendly instrument that helps us track subtle changes in patients’ central vision between appointments. This kind of home monitoring is particularly valuable for those at higher risk of progressing to wet AMD, as it allows us to detect changes early and intervene quickly.

Should the disease progress, we coordinate care closely with trusted local retina specialists to ensure our patients receive advanced treatment options like anti-VEGF injections for wet AMD.

If you live in Sebring, Wauchula, or the surrounding communities and have concerns about your macular health, come see us. Whether you’re looking for prevention, guidance, or ongoing care, we’re here to help protect your vision.
